Pre-Hispanic farmers built giant water system bottom-up, archaeologists reveal

Ancient farmers built a wonder of the world with no bosses, no rulers, no top-down authority at all. Archaeologists studying the Colombian wetlands of La Mojana found that communities thousands of years ago built a massive, engineered water and farming system, entirely through cooperation between family groups, with no centralized government directing the work. For decades, archaeologists assumed massive infrastructure projects required centralized states or rulers to organize labor. This research on La Mojana's ancient water system challenges that directly: the evidence points to a bottom-up, cooperative structure between independent family groups, with no single ruling authority coordinating the effort. This matters beyond archaeology, it suggests large-scale human cooperation and complex engineering don't require hierarchy or centralized power to succeed, offering a genuinely different model for how societies can organize themselves.
