Mathematicians proved that a truly fair election is mathematically impossible. It's not a design flaw we haven't fixed yet, it's a mathematical impossibility. This builds on a class of results in social choice theory showing that certain "fairness" properties we want from voting systems directly conflict with each other, no matter how cleverly the system is designed. Systems like the UK's constituency-based elections face an unavoidable tradeoff: making local seats reflect local votes accurately tends to distort how well the overall result matches the national vote, and vice versa. This isn't an argument for one system over another, it's proof that "fair" elections are really about which imperfection a society accepts.
