There is a planet made largely of a diamond-like carbon

55 Cancri e, a super-Earth 40 light-years away, may have a carbon-rich interior. Some models suggest much of it could be crystalline carbon under heat and pressure. 55 Cancri e is a super-Earth about 40 light-years away, orbiting so close to its star that its surface is likely molten. Early models of its density suggested an interior unusually rich in carbon, which under enough heat and pressure could form diamond-like crystalline structures. The idea comes from indirect evidence: astronomers cannot sample the planet directly, so composition is inferred from its mass, radius and the carbon-to-oxygen ratio measured in its star's light, on the assumption that a star and its planets tend to share similar starting chemistry. More recent studies using updated data have pushed back on the original carbon-rich picture, suggesting the planet may be less exotic than first proposed, so its exact interior remains a genuinely open and actively debated question rather than a settled fact.
